Medicare reform - MIT Sloan - Example business school statement
As a current Master in Public Policy candidate at the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS), I’m writing in support of my application to Sloan’s MBA program with the aim of pursuing a concurrent degree. Prior to HKS, I spent four years as a federal contractor at Acumen, LLC using data-driven analysis to design, implement, and evaluate national healthcare programs. My long-term goal is to lead a public healthcare organization, driving innovation through cross- sector collaboration. I seek to achieve this by complementing my policy toolkit with Sloan’s exceptional business training and culture of innovative, principled, and courageous leadership.
I am passionate about pursuing a dual MBA/ MPP because the challenges facing U.S. healthcare necessitate system-level fixes that require a broad array of skills. My prior work underscored the need for policymakers and providers to work collectively to design incentive compatible systems that promote access to high quality care. Last year, I led a 13-person cross functional team to convene an expert panel of industry leaders in support of overhauling Medicare’s $13 billion dialysis payment system. I directed the production of a full day of presentations to present empirical research, recommend policy proposals, and facilitate analysis and debate. Effective collaboration with key stakeholders through this channel generated significant buy-in for our proposals in rulemaking, crystalizing the value of public-private partnerships and the need for leaders who are experts in both spaces.
Sloan stands out for its unparalleled opportunities in healthcare and for its commitment to action learning. I am eager to expand my knowledge base through classes like Medicine for Managers and to put these lessons into practice through H-Labs. I am excited to contribute to Sloan’s diverse community and welcome the opportunity to further discuss how I intend to make the most of the experience to put my stamp on the world.
Sincerely,
